The Philippines is an archipelago composed of more than 7,100 islands and is famous for their beaches, mountains, and rain forests. In recent years, Palawan, an island of the Philippines, was previously voted by Condé Naste and National Geographic Traveler as the “most beautiful island in the world.”
The origins of Filipino cuisine primarily contain Spanish, American, Chinese, Japanese, Indian, and Malay-Indonesian influences. The combination of sweet, sour, salty, and spicy are traditional characteristics of the national cuisine. Although most Filipinos usually eat with a fork and spoon, it is also common to eat with your hands!
What to eat
A “Kamayan” meal consists of communally eating a feast over banana leaves with your hands. This familial style of eating is a fun way to indulge the various Filipino delicacies.
The Philippines also has a form of Spanish tapas known as, “pulutan” which are small finger foods that are typically served with alcohol.
Other popular dishes and snacks include adobo a chicken or pork dish stewed in soy sauce and vinegar, pancit a stir fried noodle dish, palabok a rice noodle dish made of a shrimp based sauce, kare-kare an oxtail stew made of peanut sauce, dinuguan a spicy stew made of pork blood, sisig a sizzling pork dish served with a fried egg, lechon a whole roasted pig, sinigang a sour soup, kaldereta a beef stew, arroz caldo a rice porridge with chicken and ginger, lumpia a spring roll made of a thin crepe wrapper, puto a mini steamed rice cake, siopao a steamed bun composed of savory or sweet fillings, empanadas a pastry made of savory fillings, balut a fermented duck egg, halo-halo a dessert made of shaved ice and mixed fruit, and bibingka a sweet rice cake made popular during Christmas season.
